To understand how organisms respond to stressors, we can use a variety of physiological measurements, such as respiration and growth. By comparing the responses between animals subject to normal conditions with those subject to stress, we can begin to understand how animals in their natural environment are likely to respond to environmental stress such as climate change or pollution.

To measure respiration, we have an Oxy-4 mini Optode system (Loligo-systems) which optically measures oxygen concentration using a chemical reaction. By using custom-made sealed chambers, the rate of respiration of an animal can be accurately determined.

One way to accurately measure the growth of an organism is by using radioisotopes such as carbon-14 and calcium-45. The isotopes are taken up by the animal under controlled conditions, and the rate of uptake can be measured.
